The Story

“Usually artists start with a blank canvas, but for me it’s the opposite. I start with an interesting picture and then I break it down.” By altering the arrangement of the images, each finished piece exists outside of its original context. “I alter them until I find something interesting, and then I stop.”

About Shobhit Sharma

Shobhit is a doctoral student and visual artist living in Durham, North Carolina. Semi-urban, his university campus gives him the freedom to explore subjects he never considered before. Last semester, he built an audio system that visually reacts to music in real time. Shobhit works under the alias “starkeffect” to create artworks based in glitch art, distortion and algorithms. Challenging the dichotomy between the real and the abstract, he likes to alter conventional arrangements derived from the real world to create artworks that are abstract in nature.

“I see my artworks as an attempt to engage the viewer’s imagination by crafting an experience that doesn’t adhere to a recognizable form, thus making their possible interpretations multifaceted in nature.”
